We Never Closed
This was the motto adopted by the Windmill Theatre in London. The claim was that it remained open when other theatres in London closed during the
second world war due to the bombing of the city. This was not strictly true. The Windmill, in common with other London theatres, closed for three weeks at the start of the war because the government feared that
crowds of people in the West End would encourage German air attacks. However rehearsals and auditions went on and the show continued during the most dreadful times of the blitz. One quote said "Sometimes they had
more bombs around them than audience".
